Sandra Anderson will join us to lead the Saturday evening talk on the Yoga Sutras and Tantra.

Each person will receive a copy of A Pilgrimage through Patanjali's Yoga Sutras by Maryam Ovissi and Jafar Alexander. As we explore a selection of Yoga Sutras, we will learn and absorb a Sanskrit word each day.

Jafar Alexander

Jafar's devoted study of Yoga has made him a multi-dimensional teacher who is able to playfully weave stories with expert sequencing and thoughtful philosophical inquiry all in one asana. He likes to call his classes "Yogasanas- keeping the Yoga in the Asana!" Jafar uses his diverse and comprehensive understanding of the yogic tradition to guide practitioners in individual sessions, group classes, weekend workshops, master classes, and teacher training programs. Jafar’s energy and presence bring yoga theory to life as he encourages yogis/yoginis to find space, allowing for movement, and leading to freedom from attachment. He shares his yoga practice and passion through a connected journey of self-awareness, conscious breath, and physical strength.

Sandra Anderson

For over 25 years, Sandra Anderson has shared her extensive experience in yoga practice and theory with students from all over the world. She is a senior faculty member and resident at the Himalayan Institute and her teaching reflects access to the living oral tradition and the embodied experience of 30 years of dedicated practice. With a background in the natural sciences and studies in classical Sanskrit, along with frequent pilgrimages to India, Sandy has a rare capacity to eloquently convey the richness of spiritual life in our contemporary world.

Maryam Ovissi

Maryam's personal mission as a teacher of Yoga is to provide an opportunity for her students to have access to tools that allow self-healing, self-empowerment, and self-realization. She carries the teachings of Sri Krishnamacharya and upholds the principle that the yoga journey is a personal individual journey and not a one-size-fits-all practice. Her unique style provides space for practitioners at all levels to journey through yoga in group classes. In her private yoga practice, Yogic tools are offered that serve the person and their personal intentions. We are all trying to get back home and Yoga is a school of remembering our true self. Maryam is honored to be a part of this lineage. Although A.G. & Indra Mohan, Bhekaji Lynch and Jafar Alexander continue to serve as her main teachers, nothing can replace the gifts and wisdom born of showing up for herself every day through sadhana (personal practice).
