How do we co-create safer yoga and spiritual communities? Through dogged investigative work, careful listening to survivor stories of assault and abuse, and close analysis of the cultic mechanisms at play in the sphere of Pattabhi Jois’s Ashtanga community, Matthew Remski’s Practice and All Is Coming offers a sober view into a collective and intergenerational trauma. It also offers a clear pathway forward into enhanced critical thinking, student empowerment, self-and-other care, and community resilience. Concluding with practical tools for a world rocked by abuse revelations, Practice and All Is Coming opens a window on the possibility of healing — and even re-enchantment.
Critical Thinking and Community Health: Working through the Abuse Crisis in Yoga
Saturday, March 28, 1 - 4 PM
$60 by March 5; $70 after March 5
A groundbreaking seminar for yoga teachers, trainers, and trainees that directly addresses the personal costs, structural roots, and community solutions to the yoga abuse crisis. Expanding from a case study of how the crimes of Pattabhi Jois were enabled and rationalized for decades, these classes will examine institutional harm as a recognizable pattern in the yoga world, and offer individual and collective tools to foster critical thinking and community health.
Attendees will learn about and discuss:
What survivors of abuse in yoga communities have to teach,
Basics of high-demand or cultic group dynamics,
The situational vulnerability of the new yoga student,
What power imbalances look like,
How abuse can be confused with care,
How high-demand groups manipulate information, language, and bodies,
Individual and group practices for resilience.
Yoga is only transformational and healing if its communities are safe and empowering. This weekend takes a clear step forward in nurturing that goal.
Matthew Remski is a yoga teacher, industry consultant, and author of nine previous books, including Threads of Yoga: A Remix of Patanjali’s Sutras, with commentary and reverie. As the survivor of two cults, his work has been pivotal in illuminating the shadows of globalized yoga and Buddhism and showing that disillusionment and critical inquiry can be gateways to mature spirituality. He facilitates modules in philosophy, history, culture and community health in yoga teacher training programs internationally. He lives in Toronto with his partner and their two children.
